Charli and Crissy

Photobucket

Their names probably sound like some glib talk show hosts' but one can never guess what wonders this tandem can do. I can still remember MJ raving about their wonderful illustrations. And just by looking at them, I could tell that they were created by some strange beings from another universe. It never dawned on me that I'd get to have a close encounter with them one day and be faced with the most normal-looking kids fresh out of college.

There is never a dull moment working with this creative duo. Crissy's enthusiasm could light up a whole auditorium while Charli's soulful aria could wake even the tiniest roach in it. So when MJ asked me if I was willing to do these whimsical portraits for them, I didn’t hesitate even if I had to draw them on a plane to Singapore and back.

Mama Sita's Lutong Bahay

Welcome to the official launching of Mama Sita's Lutong Bahay Recipe Book. Let me first thank everyone for coming to this special event. And to the loveliest lady in the world for her unwavering support...my proud mom(standing in front and looking up to me with tears of joy rolling down her cheeks).haha!

That is how I had envisioned my self two years ago when I handed the drafts of the Lutong Bahay. Two long years in the making. And I could no longer remember how many revisions it took but those nights when I would patiently wait for my turn on my housemates' computers developing the framework and illustrations were enough proof that this is hard work neatly bound with love. Not to mention the efforts exhausted by a group of talented young artists that involves a flawless skincare endorser, a balladeer and a Harry Potter fan, a romantic sculptor and a repenting emo; the inputs of the chef/food stylist/photographer; and of course the unmistakable taste of the genius who is behind all these.

I'm overflowing with excitement. I can't wait to see my excited mom brag about how her son did this and that. And my supportive high school classmates having their own copies. Here's the good news ladies, you don't have to fall in line once this hits the shelves. Just text or email me how many boxes you are buying and I'll be coming home with them, all signed.haha

Panggisa (This is the Remix)

It was like a scene from my childhood days when I used to run around every corner of this house and squeeze myself inside cabinets or under beds. I'm home to reclaim my treasure trove. I was looking for some old clothes to wear when I chanced upon the proofs of Mama Sita's Panggisa Mix. I had left it for my stage mother to brag about while I lifted 50lb condensers in Japan. The encounter brought back good memories - my former arki housemates, the sleepless nights developing the layout and font, the photoshoot in the Jollibee Plaza's CR and the excitement our office had while waiting for the proofs and getting it to the shelves. When it came out, everyone was happy.

I need to snap out of this if I want to get things right in such a limited time. They are the reason why I'm here anyway. My brainchild is now out in the market. Everything, from photography to graphic design, was done by moi except for the illustration on the banner. I'm sorry, I just need some ego massage right now.haha

100% All-Natural

Yesterday I went to my former office, which by the way is a company that's been around for quite a long time selling sauces and mixes. During my stay as their in-house art director, I was caught in a transition from the traditional look to the new image they're trying to portray in order to compete with rival companies. I had designed some packages, one is out in the market today and three more coming out next year. What's more interesting is I got to work with younger artists. Fresh from college, they were full of new ideas and optimism. It was fun working with them and they were the reason why I visited.

As I stepped inside the studio, I noticed the cozy atmosphere that could have brought me to deep slumber. Boxes of colorful traditional cloths and handicrafts occupied half the room and the aroma of natural spices and vegetables seemed to stick on the walls and my friends. It was like I traveled back in time to a great cook's kitchen. And I could see the personification in her granddaughter who's been the brilliant mind behind their success today. I guess they have finally succeeded in their goal. And I could hear Mama Sita whisper in my ear, "panahon na para tangkilikin ang sariling atin."
